Last Thursday the 19th, the fire brigade came to our school. Two firemen came in their fire engine to give us fire safety training.
They showed us things that we should be careful with like electrical cables, deep fat fryers and all electrical items that could start fires. The firemen gave us a fire safety selection pack. Each pack contained cards, games and a check list that had to be filled in at home. When this checklist is completed we get a certificate from the fire brigade.
In the pack we also got safety cards to read, for example ‘Scratch and Flint’ and ‘Arc’. These explain about the dangers that can happen when dealing with fire and electricity. It also gives us ideas of what to do at night before bed and things to check in the house like the fire alarm.
The firemen told us it is very important to have an escape route planned in case of a fire especially at night and to follow a bedtime routine. They also told us not to overload the electricity sockets as this can cause a fire.
Following the training we went outside to look at the fire engine. The firemen let us use their hose and we got to knock over two cones with water and practice our aim. This was great fun and we even got to wear the fireman’s helmet when doing it!
We learned a lot from the firemen. We really enjoyed their visit. It was really interesting and exciting.
